A few kilometers

The National Forest Park, right on your doorstep

Just a few kilometers from Maison Michaut lies the Parc National des Forêts, France's eleventh national park, established in 2019. Covering over 240,000 hectares between the Côte-d'Or and Haute-Marne departments, this deciduous sanctuary is one of the largest protected forest areas in the European plains. Here, you might encounter deer, roe deer, wild boar, and, for the very lucky, the rare European wildcat. Numerous marked trails allow for hiking, cycling, and mountain biking.

20 minutes by car

Châtillon-sur-Seine and the Vix Treasure

About 20 minutes by car, Châtillon-sur-Seine is home to one of Europe's most important archaeological treasures: the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais, which houses the famous Vix Krater. Discovered in 1953 in the tomb of a Celtic princess from the 5th century BC, this 1.64-metre bronze vessel is the largest known ancient vase in the world. The small town along the banks of the Seine also lends itself to a peaceful riverside stroll.

30 to 45 minutes away

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain and Semur-en-Auxois

Two must-see villages, 30 to 45 minutes from Maison Michaut. Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, ranked among the "Plus Beaux Villages de France", is famous for its aniseed sweets made since the 9th century in its former abbey, and for serving as the setting of the film Chocolat (2000). Semur-en-Auxois, a medieval town perched on a rocky outcrop, impresses with its fortified towers and cobbled streets. Craft shops, local restaurants and spectacular viewpoints await.

About 40 minutes

MuséoParc Alésia: In the footsteps of Vercingetorix

About 40 minutes south, the MuséoParc Alésia retraces one of the founding episodes of French history: the Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, where Vercingetorix surrendered to Julius Caesar. The interpretation centre, designed by architect Bernard Tschumi, offers an engaging and well-researched immersion. Archaeological remains and the monumental statue of Vercingetorix round out the visit. A fascinating site for visitors of all ages.

30-minute drive

Abbaye de Fontenay, a Cistercian gem

The Abbaye de Fontenay is one of the oldest Cistercian abbeys still intact in Europe. Founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, it offers a striking glimpse into medieval spirituality, surrounded by perfectly preserved gardens and water features.

Hiking, cycling and nature

Outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice: long-distance hiking trails (the GR2 and GR7 both cross the region), greenways for cycling, springs and waterfalls — including the Source of the Seine just a few kilometres from Maison Michaut, where the river is born at the foot of a grotto adorned with a stone nymph. The region also lends itself to fishing, birdwatching and family walks.

Vineyards, Crémant and Burgundy cuisine

The Châtillonnais is one of the main production areas for Crémant de Bourgogne, best discovered directly at the cellars of growers in Channay, Massingy and Molesme. Further south, about an hour's drive away, the celebrated Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune offer their grands crus and prestigious cellars. As for food, don't miss Époisses cheese, jambon persillé, Burgundy snails and bœuf bourguignon — local specialities to savour in the region's fine restaurants.
